Celebrating Champions of Innovation in Healthcare

Workday is participating at the HIMSS Global Conference & Exhibition this week, where the theme is “Champions of Health Unite.” Here are some Workday customers who've served as champions of innovation within their healthcare organizations, leading digital strategies that streamline operations, grow their businesses, and nurture the right talent.

As the healthcare industry continues to shift, providers face new challenges and opportunities. With changing regulations, modifications to reimbursement processes, and increases in patient volume and expectations of care, effective use of technology becomes increasingly more important.

This week, Workday is once again participating in the HIMSS Global Conference & Exhibition, the leading health information and technology conference in the U.S. The theme of this year’s conference is “Champions of Health Unite,” and we’re excited to join others in celebrating these champions.

At Workday, we learn a lot from customer feedback which helps us support healthcare innovation. We’d like to take this time to celebrate our customers who have served as champions of innovation within their own organizations. These trailblazing leaders have helped develop digital strategies to boost efficiencies, streamline operations, grow their businesses, nurture the right talent, and ultimately position their organizations to take on any new challenges and opportunities that come their way. While this list is by no means exhaustive, let’s take a look at several of these leaders and their successes.

Kevin Olson, chief information officer, OU Medicine

OU Medicine is a comprehensive academic health system made up of acute care hospitals, ambulatory care sites, and is one of the top clinical trial organizations for cancer research in the nation. Olson and team are rethinking traditional operations while building new infrastructure, including the deployment of a cloud-based enterprise resource planning (ERP) system and the selection of a new electronic medical record (EMR) system. They use telemedicine, artificial intelligence (AI), and machine learning technologies that are dynamic, provide ease of access to care, and allow providers to have more time with patients. Their data-driven approach to technological innovation and focus on research and education helps them best support patient care. Says Olson: “We implement technology that does not create barriers or take away firm interaction with the patient. We focus on finding the right balance with people, process, and technology.”

Chris Pass, chief financial officer, John Muir Health

John Muir Health is a nationally recognized, not-for-profit healthcare organization that serves the San Francisco Bay Area. Pass and team understand that the only way a healthcare organization can always be prepared for change is to have flexible processes and systems. Pass also helped lead a major project to replace over 13 different back office systems with one cloud-based ERP system for human resources, finance, supply chain, and more, providing business leaders with greater visibility into such things a workforce utilization and project profitability. Says Pass: “That is the true differentiator that will allow us to swiftly adapt to changes in healthcare and transform our organization.”

Sarah Richardson, vice president of IT change management, DaVita Medical Group

DaVita Medical Group is one of the nation’s leading independent medical groups, focused on providing high quality, integrated, and coordinated care. Richardson and team are improving the patient experience and ensuring patients have the resources to receive the preventive and disease management care they need. They have redesigned their care model by upgrading their patient call routing system and other technology—including cloud-based HR, payroll, and recruiting—and trained their patient support staff to be a more useful, supportive resource for patients. Says Richardson, “True transformational innovation requires an organization that is willing to take risks and reinvent themselves.”

Josh Robinson, vice president and chief information officer, Sanford Health

Sanford Health is the largest rural, not-for profit healthcare system in the nation, serving patients who traditionally have less access to care. In addition to adopting a streamlined, cloud-based supply chain management process, as well as finance and HR in the cloud, Robinson and team are improving the employee experience—which in turn improves the patient experience. Sanford Health has created processes and implemented tools that enable employees to collaborate effectively and minimize manual, tedious processes, so providers and staff can practice at the top of their license and spend their time delivering high-quality patient care. Says Robinson: “To align your staff around the patient experience, organizations need to rely on one source of truth and have intuitive systems and collaboration tools to support their employees.”

Supporting Leaders in Healthcare

Workday is proud to support change in healthcare and the leaders of today and tomorrow. When healthcare organizations have a flexible and secure cloud-based technology foundation, they’re able to quickly adapt, whether that’s changing their operations, entering new service areas, or supporting merger activity. Providing tools leaders can use to streamline and gain insights into their business, and attract and retain the best talent, allows them to reach their business goals now and in the future.

As healthcare champions know, their organizations are most successful when they have happy, engaged employees. When employees feel supported, that has a positive effect throughout their organization. Leveraging technology to streamline administrative tasks enables staff to focus on patient care, leading to positive patient experience and improved care quality.

We’re honored to have these healthcare champions as part of the Workday community and look forward to our continuing partnership.
