Workday Recognized as a Leader in Inaugural 2026 Gartner® Magic Quadrant™ for Workforce Management Technology

Workday has been recognized as a Leader in the inaugural 2026 Gartner® Magic Quadrant™ for Workforce Management. Built for the way work gets done, our workforce management suite brings time tracking, absence management, scheduling, and labor optimization together within the HCM suite—so operations leaders can manage labor costs, compliance, schedules, and time in one system.

I've spent most of my career close to frontline teams, and one complaint keeps surfacing no matter the industry: the tools meant to make their jobs easier usually don't. That’s why I am proud to announce Workday has been named a Leader in its inaugural Magic Quadrant for Workforce Management Technology. For us, it’s less of a milestone than validation of an argument we've been making for years—that frontline workers deserve the same caliber of technology as everyone else in the enterprise.

The Cost of Getting WFM Wrong

The stakes are real. Frontline industries can see annual turnover hover around 60%, and in some sub-industries it climbs even higher. Understaffing a single location by just one person can cost hundreds of dollars a day in lost revenue. And managers are still losing hours every week to admin busywork—time that should be spent coaching their teams and serving customers instead of stitching together spreadsheets and systems that were never built for the frontline.

That's the root cause we keep coming back to: software built for corporate environments, then pushed onto the frontline, where it slows everyone down instead of getting out of the way.

Why This Recognition Matters To Us

1. Industry Alignment

Workday’s workforce management suite stands apart because it is built for the realities of frontline operations across industries—not as a generic workforce tool with an industry label attached.

Retailers, hospitality brands, manufacturers, and other frontline businesses all operate with different labor models, coverage needs, compliance requirements, and employee expectations. Workday supports that complexity with intelligent scheduling capabilities that help managers align labor to demand while accounting for worker availability, preferences, and skills.

Our AI-powered demand forecasting and Smart Schedule Generation help teams move from manual scheduling guesswork to more precise, demand-driven workforce planning. The result is a workforce management approach that can flex to the way each sector runs. This helps organizations cover the right shifts, support their people, and operate with greater confidence.

2. A Single, Unified Experience

This is the heart of why we believe we were named a Leader: a simplified frontline experience and a holistic view of the entire operation. From time tracking and labor spend to compliance risk and payroll, it’s all in a single system. That unification gives leaders real-time visibility and, just as importantly, the foundation to apply trustworthy AI. When your workforce data lives in the same place as the rest of your HR, payroll, and finance data, you're not reconciling systems after the fact—you're making decisions on a live, accurate picture of your business.

3. A Mobile-First Investment

For workers, one app replaces five. Time off, schedules, pay, shift swaps, preferences, and career growth all live in one place, giving people the flexibility to set their availability or pick up an open shift in just a few taps. When tools are this easy to use, people actually use them—and that's what drives retention.

Time Back, By Design

This is where it gets exciting. Workday's Workforce Management Agent is powered by Sana, the AI layer built into Workday, that automates the time-consuming tasks pulling managers and workers away from higher-value work.

Workforce Management Agent runs frontline and self-service skills: these skills work together in the background to allow teams to achieve more than tedious administrative tasks. The Workforce Management Agent also works seamlessly with the Talent Acquisition Agent to provide your frontline with a full end-to-end experience from pre-to-post hire. With the Candidate Experience Agent, we deliver a responsive candidate experience that keeps top talent engaged from first contact through offer.

Frontline Agent provides bulk time actions for managers and automatically maps spreadsheet time entry data directly into your core systems, eliminating double-entry and tedious manual work. It’s already delivering results: a 75% reduction in time entry and billing errors, a 75% time savings for workers (cutting a 60-minute weekly task down to 15 minutes), and a 1-3% increase in realization rates.

Self-Service Agent supports intelligent scheduling, bulk actions, and SMS-based absence and shift replacements. It automates schedule changes, time tracking, shift swaps, and demand-based staffing while applying Workday policies, knowledge, and organizational data to route approvals according to configured rules. Customers using it see up to a 90% reduction in time spent managing shift schedule changes, a 65% average improvement in process automation, and $100,000 in savings on deployment and subscription costs.

Where the Impact Actually Shows Up

None of this matters if it doesn't show up in results, and it does, across every industry we serve:

  • Valvoline reduced the time to generate weekly schedules from 2 hours to 15 minutes, freeing managers to focus on coaching and customers instead of paperwork. “The employee and manager experience has gone better than expected. Ops leadership requested an accelerated rollout across all markets,” said Jon Caldwell, Chief People Officer at Valvoline.

  • Life Time realized $1 million in annual labor savings, a 50% reduction in overtime costs, and 50,000 manager hours saved every year.

  • Ace Hardware logged more than 1,100 shift transactions on mobile in its first year live with Workday Scheduling.

  • Hy-Vee reduced scheduling time by upwards of 50%.

  • On Running decreased manager time spent scheduling by 66%.

These aren't pilot programs. They're large-scale proof that unifying workforce management with the rest of HCM changes what's possible for frontline organizations.

An Early Bet Paid Off

We believe, being named a Leader in Gartner's inaugural Magic Quadrant for Workforce Management Technology validates a bet we made early: that workforce management shouldn't be a bolt-on point solution, but a core part of a unified platform that also runs HR, payroll, and finance. Strong industry alignment, a single unified experience, and a mobile-first investment in the people doing the work are not just what earned us this recognition, it's the roadmap for where we're headed next.

We're just getting started. As frontline industries continue to face pressure around costs, compliance, and retention, we'll keep building toward a future where the technology disappears into the background and the humans—workers, managers, and operators alike—get their time back to do what they do best.
