Why Yasmeen Ahmad Is Excited To Lead Workday Data Cloud’s Next Chapter

Workday's new SVP of Data Cloud on how agentic AI is reshaping the enterprise, why data is key to driving scalable AI value, and what she's looking forward to at her first Rising.

Yasmeen Ahmad has joined Workday as senior vice president, Data Cloud, with deep expertise turning breakthrough technology, from cloud data platforms to generative AI, into enterprise value. Since introducing Workday Data Cloud, a data layer that helps organizations accelerate AI value by connecting their HR and finance data to the systems they already use, we've been innovating at a rapid pace. At Workday Rising this year, Ahmad will take the stage to share new capabilities and where we're taking Data Cloud next.

1. Why is now an exciting time to join Workday?

Ahmad: The sheer scale of what we are tackling here is exhilarating. For 30 years, the enterprise software industry has accepted a fundamentally absurd compromise. We built highly secure, context-rich applications to run our businesses. But the second we wanted to make that data "smart," what did we do? We extracted it. We dumped it into external data lakes, stripped away the security, and lost all the business logic.

We are now breaking open the closed SaaS monolith to end that compromise. Workday operates at the intersection of people and money, which means our domain is fundamentally different. An AI hallucination in a marketing campaign is an inconvenience; a hallucination in global payroll or corporate ledger reconciliation is a regulatory disaster. The required margin of error is absolute zero. We are turning the world’s most trusted system of record into an open, headless, and living platform for agents. This is the exact architectural friction point that will dictate the next decade of enterprise technology, and there is nowhere else I would rather be.

2. You've led major product organizations at Google and now Workday. What advice would you give women aspiring to leadership roles in tech?

Ahmad: Stop waiting for formal authority, and run directly toward the hardest, messiest problems.

In deeply engineering-first cultures, whether at Google or here at Workday, hierarchies and titles do not buy you a single thing. You cannot command a room just because of the title on your badge. Real leadership is forged by sitting in the trenches with engineering, breaking down systemic walls, and stepping into the burning rooms for high-stakes operational turnarounds.

Too often, people wait for the perfect promotion or permission to lead. Don't. Build your technical context so deeply that you become the person who can navigate the chaos and drive execution when the space is bending in new and ambiguous ways. You earn respect by pulling the team through the fire and proving you can execute. Own the hardest problems, and the titles will take care of themselves.

3. Your career has given you a unique vantage point on how agentic AI has evolved across the technology industry. What's the biggest shift you've seen?

Ahmad: The enterprise market is rapidly trying to move from conversational chat to real-time action. Leaders don't just want sidecar copilots that summarize text anymore; they are seeking autonomous agents that can actually execute multi-step tasks, like halting an invalid payroll run or reallocating project resources.

But here is the structural shift the industry is bumping into: you cannot take action where data goes to rest. You can only take action where the operational reality lives.

Right now, enterprises are trying to bolt brittle AI agents onto the outside of their systems, forcing generative models to guess relationships across flat, 24-hour-old database extracts. It’s a fractured mess that guarantees hallucinations. To power true agentic execution, we have to shift from probabilistic guesswork to deterministic context. AI must be embedded directly into the live execution loop, where temporal timelines and strict accounting constraints natively live.

4. What is the biggest hidden risk enterprises face as they deploy autonomous agents?

Ahmad: Custody erasure. Traditional security was built for humans looking at screens, asking "can this user read this table?" But autonomous agents don't just read; they act headlessly.

When you strip away the UI and rely on traditional backend API keys, you erase human custody. You create immediate enterprise liability because the system can no longer verify intent or evaluate consequence. 

5. How is your team working to combat that enterprise security risk?

Ahmad: The most critical thing we are doing is shifting to action-level security. We are governing the entire chain, evaluating real-time PO budget thresholds, enforcing dynamic cost center matrices, and validating compliance rules, at the exact millisecond an agent attempts to act, all under explicit human delegation. If you don't attach security to the action itself, automation becomes a liability.

6. What value does Workday Data Cloud bring to customers? 

Ahmad: Every enterprise fault line in AI right now stems from one false premise: to power intelligence, data must leave the system of record. Workday Data Cloud is destroying that premise by turning the system of record inside out.

We are transforming our platform into an open, secure, and headless execution plane. The value comes down to unrestricted ecosystem access without data duplication. We are giving autonomous agents, whether they are Workday's native agents or a customer's agent, direct programmatic access to our live, in-memory operational graph. They are getting access to codified domain logic and mathematically precise answers, allowing them to execute headlessly without an 18-month integration tax.

7. Why is building a strong data foundation essential to driving scalable AI value?

Ahmad: Don't get me wrong: data lakes are brilliant and absolutely essential for massive, cross-domain historical analytics. But they were never designed to be the real-time execution engine for autonomous agents. 

When you try to automate that broken loop with AI, the architecture snaps. An autonomous agent cannot safely execute a live business action on a secondary copy of data sitting in a data lake. It falls into a latency trap. 

A strong data foundation collapses this divide. It allows agents to query live operational state and multi-year historical trends in a single, sub-second loop. Without that foundation natively bridging analytics and transactions, moving beyond AI pilots is an exercise in futility.

8. What are you looking forward to most at your first Workday Rising?

Ahmad: At Rising, I am looking forward to stepping out of the theoretical and into the trenches with our customers. The industry is exhausted by AI hype and massive token consumption bills that yield no material ROI.

At Rising, we are moving beyond passive data lakes. We are going to show the market what it actually looks like to collapse the divide between thinking and doing. I am incredibly excited to prove that the only place AI can safely run is inside the system of record, bound by absolute mathematical certainty.
