In this article we discuss:

Legal technology innovation happens in stages. Years ago, being able to extract dozens of common terms from large volumes of contracts and related documents quickly and accurately was a revelation. Evisort led the way.

Then, being able to create custom AI models to analyze precisely the terms your organization cares about was another huge milestone. Harnessing the power of proprietary and third-party generative AI, Evisort delivered the industry-leading toolkit for self-serve, custom contract AI.

Now, I’m excited to announce that we’ve reached another inflection point: Teams can now choose pre-built, custom AI models for deep contract analysis spanning HR, finance, IT, sales, revenue operations, M&A, and other use cases—ready to deploy right away.

Introducing the Custom AI Model Library

The Custom AI Model Library for Workday Contract Lifecycle Management (CLM), powered by Evisort AI, is a bold new step in our mission to democratize contract intelligence across the enterprise. For organizations looking to manage risk, reduce costs, accelerate processes, and drive faster growth, this isn’t just an upgrade, it’s a game changer.

We’re launching the Custom AI Model Library with over 120 pre-built and tested models that serve not only a wide range of enterprise teams, but also vertical industries like healthcare, financial services, and construction. This new development makes advanced contract analysis instantly accessible to every corner of the enterprise.

Let’s explore why by looking at the full range of capabilities for our customers to drive great business outcomes by knowing everything about their contracts.

What Are Standard AI Models?

What type of contract is it? Who are the counterparties? Has it been executed? What is the governing law? When does it expire? How can it be terminated?

These are some of the dozens of common terms and data points that Workday CLM’s Standard AI models analyze for each contract added to the system.

Included in every deployment, our Standard AI models are pre-trained on millions of contracts for accuracy and reliability. They populate fields like key dates, payment terms, renewal type, and more—saving tedious manual effort and avoiding errors. They also identify and extract critical clauses like Limitation of Liability, Indemnification, Change of Control, Termination for Convenience, and more.

How Do Custom AI Models Take Teams Further?

No two organizations have exactly the same contract analysis needs, especially across industries and geographies. Further, each team across the business has its own needs for contract data, whether for strategic decision-making, managerial reporting, regulatory auditing, or just routine processes.

Creating custom AI models help Workday CLM customers go deeper and wider with their analysis of contract data. It lets them tailor their analysis as desired to track exactly the terms that matter to them, even as those needs change over time.

Custom AI models are initiated with a simple question or prompt, which is then evaluated for accuracy against a small sample of the customer’s documents (usually 10 or fewer). The customer can then give feedback on each result (“correct or incorrect” and “why or why not”).

Based on this feedback, Evisort AI automatically recommends enhancements to the prompt to optimize performance, as validated by an additional test round. When the customer is satisfied with the results, they “publish” the model with a single click.

Evisort AI automatically recommends prompt enhancements to optimize accuracy for customer-created models.

The new custom model is then continuously applied to all relevant contract sets as selected by the customer. For example, they may choose to apply the model only to supplier agreements, or customer contracts, or documents from a particular geography or jurisdiction. However the scope is defined, all applicable contracts (past and future) will have a new data field automatically populated by the published model.

What Does the Custom AI Model Library Add?

With the Custom AI Model Library, getting started is as simple as “choose, go, know.” From within Workday CLM, you can browse through the pre-trained models by category—such as Employment Agreements, Lease Agreements, Data Privacy, Sales & Revenue Operations, Insurance Information, Construction, and many more. You’ll see a description of what each model does, and can add it to your instance with just a few clicks.

Customers can browse the new library to choose from custom AI models spanning a wide range of business use cases.

Developed by a dedicated team of legal and AI experts at Workday, each custom model is pre-tested for high accuracy and ready to be deployed right away. However, customers still have the option to refine the custom model instructions as desired, and then evaluate accuracy via the same feedback process described above.

Can Custom AI Models Do More Than Extract Terms?

Custom AI models can go far beyond the four corners of an agreement. They can calculate dates and amounts that don’t expressly appear in the documents (such as renewal date, notification dates, currency values, payment amounts, and more). They can summarize complex terms in simple, natural language. And they can classify, rate, and rank even complex, nuanced terms according to the organization’s specific requirements.

These capabilities have opened the creative floodgates for contract intelligence across the enterprise. Does the office of the CIO want to track all supplier contracts with an annual contract value higher than one million euros that are up for renewal next year and have an above-average risk for data security vulnerabilities? Custom AI makes it possible.

Below are a few examples of how custom AI models can summarize and simplify legal terms in plain language that business teams—like procurement, revenue operations, and property managers—can use to trigger action, even when such terms are collected from multiple parts of a contract.

Custom AI models in Workday CLM can summarize contract terms in straightforward language, creating data points that can be shared across teams and systems.

How Have Legal and Business Teams Benefitted From Custom AI?

To date, Workday CLM customers have identified and generated over 200 million terms that go far beyond basic term extractions. These critical insights have helped them respond to changing market conditions, new regulatory challenges, and rigorous corporate governance policies.

Here are just three real-life examples:

  1. Facing a global supply chain disruption causing unmanageable delays, a major corporation used custom AI to quickly identify 600 contracts out of 24,000 that allowed it to charge its customers for partial shipments. This enabled the organization to preserve cash flow and maintain operations until the supply chain issues were resolved.

  2. In response to changing data privacy laws, a large organization used custom AI to quickly analyze tens of thousands of contracts for outdated data privacy language. By prioritizing and updating non-compliant contracts, they avoided potential fines under the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) and California Privacy Rights Act (CPRA).

  3. A massive global technology provider has implemented a series of specialized procurement policies for its suppliers—from support for disabled users, to intellectual property protections, to in-depth data processing restrictions, and more. Custom AI allows them to maintain compliance with these policies by continuously tracking all such terms across existing and new supplier agreements.

How Can Teams Access the Insights From Custom AI Models?

Data is more valuable when it tells a story you can share. Where the AI-powered insights are numbers, dates, or short pieces of text, Workday CLM dashboards are a powerful way to gain visibility. Workday CLM dashboards are interactive, lightning-fast, easily customizable, and always current.

Customers can choose from existing dashboards or create as many as they’d like, for granular use cases across teams. Click on any value in the dashboard and you’ll automatically filter down to just those contracts that meet the criteria.

Interactive, shareable dashboards in Workday CLM provide total contract visibility for teams across the enterprise.

For data points that don’t readily lend themselves to visual dashboards—like summaries of key terms or non-standard text—table displays serve the need. Table displays are customizable and easily exportable, to put structured data points from agreements at your fingertips.

This table display in Workday CLM shows addresses, square footage, rental rates, and other terms automatically extracted from real estate lease agreements.

Additionally, all these data points can be shared across systems. As but one example, many of our customers share contract data points with Salesforce, displaying actionable terms as part of the customer record. Ready access to these facts help sales, marketing, and revenue operations manage customer relationships and drive growth.

Now that Evisort is part of Workday, our customers will similarly see a growing range of benefits from contract and document data enriching solutions and triggering actions across the Workday ecosystem.
