You ask your smart speaker to play your favorite song. The lights in your home gently adjust as the sun sets. Your calendar suggests the perfect time for your team to meet to discuss the next big project. AI works subtly in the background to make our lives easier. But what if that same technology wasn’t merely assisting, but actively developing business ecosystems and collaborating seamlessly?

Human-AI collaboration is already here and many businesses have stepped into the AI revolution. The rise of AI agents has transformed the way enterprises operate. Gartner predicts that agentic AI will be able to autonomously resolve 80% of common customer service issues. MicKinsey & Company reports that 92% of businesses plan to increase their investment in AI in 2025 and agentic AI is a major factor.

These autonomous agents are stepping into real-world business scenarios and fundamentally reshaping the way we work. We’re seeing a huge shift as businesses seek to leverage its potential. From customer service and data analysis to supply chain management and beyond, the endless capabilities of these autonomous systems have prompted organizations to rethink their strategies and embrace the myriad possibilities AI has to offer.

But just as we enter the era of human-machine collaboration, a new development is on the horizon—agent-to-agent communication (A2A). A recent breakthrough has opened up the opportunity for agents to interact with each other, putting us on the cusp of a new chapter.

Jeremiah Owyang, VC at Blitzscaling Ventures and founder of AI startup series Llama Lounge, offered his perspective on charting the course for A2A.

Key Takeaways

  • A2A is the next evolution. Agents will soon move beyond solo tasks, fundamentally reshaping business. This shift promises a path forward for businesses to scale quickly and efficiently as agents collaborate to overcome complex workflows.
  • Unlocking operational success. A2A untangles complex processes and puts them on autopilot. From dynamic supply chain adjustments to real-time customer service solutions, agents work together to anticipate and resolve issues, freeing human teams to focus on more strategic tasks.
  • Innovation accelerated. Agent collaboration in real-time fuels rapid innovation, creating boundless growth opportunities. A midsize online retailer can now provide a unique customer journey thanks to teams of agents working together in real-time to generate a personalized experience. This levels the playing field, allowing businesses of all sizes, not just large corporations, to adapt, evolve, and lead in their respective markets.
  • Navigating challenges is crucial. A2A offers immense potential, however, businesses need to plan for key concerns like data security, transparency, integration, and the need for human oversight to deploy effective, responsible agents.

In the future, it may not be uncommon to hear someone say, “Have my agent call your agent.”

What Is Agent-to-Agent Communication?

What if AI agents could complete tasks without you? What if they could collaborate with each other, freeing you to focus on tasks that require a human touch? A2A communication is the ability of autonomous AI agents to exchange information, coordinate actions, and collaborate with each other.

Owyang sees this as the next step in enterprise AI. “Agent-to-agent is the next evolution of AI, where autonomous agents communicate, collaborate, and transact without direct human involvement. This is the next phase beyond business-to-agent (B2A), where businesses will need to engage not just with human buyers but with their AI representatives.”

Imagine stepping into a new era of enterprise operations, where AI agents collaborate autonomously to drive innovation for your organization.

Unlocking the Advantages of A2A

Picture your business running smoother than ever before. We're not just talking about small improvements, but a real transformation. Think of it: AI agents, like super-efficient digital teammates, chatting and working together to make things happen. The perfect project coordinators. One assigns duties, one analyzes and compiles data and reports, and another aligns schedules and deadlines. These efficient agents work together to create a seamless workflow to help you flawlessly manage your project or business.

Agentic AI collaboration will represent a shift in how enterprises operate. Enabling agents to exchange information will drive new levels of innovation and efficiency. Inter-agent communication will create a more dynamic, responsive business ecosystem, unlocking compelling advantages, such as:

  • Put operations on autopilot: With seamless data exchange and coordination, inter-agent communication could optimize processes across a number of operational domains, increasing efficiency. Think about it: your supply chain, sensing a potential hiccup, instantly reroutes deliveries, keeping everything on track. Or, if you're in e-commerce, AI agents step in to handle customer issues, freeing up your team for big-picture strategies. It's like having a system that anticipates problems and solves them before they even disrupt your day.
  • Scale without limits: Every business encounters challenges when it comes to growth but A2A can help organizations leap over those hurdles. AI agents provide 24/7 availability and can be readily scaled to handle increasing workloads, supporting sustainable business growth. Collaborating together, these agents could handle increasing volumes of tasks and interactions allowing enterprises to grow without the growing pains.
  • Real-time, supercharged insights: We're moving beyond basic data crunching. Think of AI agents that can spot hidden patterns and make predictions with incredible accuracy. Picture brokers leveraging A2A-driven insights to make quick, informed decisions. Or delivery routes adjusted and optimized in real-time.
  • Leveling the playing field: A2A communication isn’t just for large corporations. Inter-agent collaboration empowers small businesses too. Automating key tasks allows growing businesses to allocate their limited resources efficiently. It's like having a team of ultra-efficient assistants, making growth more accessible than ever.

Owyang predicts that A2A collaboration will go beyond just simple automation, with AI agents working together to complete transactions, hire, and negotiate. “AI agents will complete most transactions on the internet, on apps, and in the enterprise. Humans will use AI agents as their primary go to resource to retrieve information, the primary user interface, and start to rely on them to make decisions.”

In the future, it may not be uncommon to hear someone say, “Have my agent call your agent.”

As these agents get smarter, we need to understand how they're making decisions.

What Challenges Will A2A Present?

Of course when considering the potential for collaborative AI agents, we must consider its challenges. Collaboration between autonomous systems introduces complex risks that, if unaddressed, can lead to major consequences. It’s important that organizations take a proactive approach focused on ethical considerations, security, and robust governance to mitigate potential drawbacks.

  • Data security is non-negotiable: Sharing data comes with risks. So, how do we make sure we're doing it safely? Organizations will need to ensure that they have robust cybersecurity measures in place. More agents sharing information means more potential entry points for breaches. With company and customer information on the line, it’s important that businesses consider the ways they will protect sensitive information.
  • Transparency and ethics—take accountability: As these agents get smarter, we need to understand how they're making decisions. If agents are not carefully monitored, they can perpetuate and amplify existing biases in data, leading to unfair or discriminatory outcomes. Creating trust is key. Responsible AI advocate and Harvard University fellow Dr. Rumman Chowdhury has said, “I have to be able to trust something to use it and we are only all going to benefit from something if people are confident in the output or the outcome of whatever it is they’re using.” There need to be clear explanations, especially for complex actions.
  • Human oversight remains essential: AI agents are powerful tools, but they're not a replacement for human judgment. Enterprises that adopt A2A in the future must remember that human-AI collaboration is still key to their organization’s success. Over-reliance on automation can lead to errors, malfunctions, or allow for AI agents to make incorrect decisions. Rigorous testing and monitoring will require a human touch.
  • Integration—it’s going to take work: Getting these agents to communicate seamlessly? That's a technical challenge. Inter-agent communication will take time and require significant technical expertise and careful planning. Organizations need to consider communication protocols between different AI agent systems. Without protocols in place, organizations will end up with fragmented, inefficient agent ecosystems.

Owyang suggests organizations consider “agent verification to ensure only good actor agents are participating and granting access. Fail-safe reviews with humans in the loop for key review steps. And, energy efficiency to ensure agents don’t consume unneeded energy.”

Essentially, businesses will need a proactive strategy when it comes to inter-agent collaboration. That means strong security measures, clear ethical guidelines, and recognizing the continued importance of human involvement. Plan for these critical areas and A2A will deliver on its promise.

A2A Is Just the Beginning

AI agents talking to each other is going to change the game. We're talking about a future where our systems are getting smarter and more efficient all the time.

As AI technology continues to progress, enterprises should anticipate increasingly sophisticated AI agents that collaborate to address the growing and ever-changing needs of organizations.

In a recent newsletter, Owyang even pushes the idea of agent-to-agent interactions one step further, “In the mid-future, we’ll see autonomous AI organizations emerge—entirely comprised of AI agents. We won’t even know if they were created by humans. These agent swarms will communicate, offer services, generate revenue, and evolve by self-improving over time. I call this an Autonomous Organization.”

So, here's the thing: we can't afford to wait and see what happens. Advancements in agentic AI are moving at lightning speed. A2A is just one of the many predictions about the future of agentic AI.

Of course, we've got to be smart about the challenges. But if we tackle them now, we'll be way ahead of the curve. This is about building a future where our businesses are more productive, more innovative, and just plain better.
